Recovery is not the end. It is the beginning of a life built on identity, connection, and purpose.
Trait-Based Model of Recovery

Recovery begins with what is still strong.

The Trait-Based Model of Recovery helps people identify, develop, and balance the traits that shape behavior, relationships, and lasting change. The Start from Strength Recovery Experience Guides bring the model to life through structured learning, reflection, and practice.

Strengths first  •  Human centered  •  Measurable
Behavior is often the signal. Look beneath it
A different starting point

Recovery requires more than symptom reduction.

Traditional approaches often begin with the behavior that must stop. Trait-Based Recovery asks what the behavior may be communicating, then helps people understand the patterns, needs, strengths, and pressures underneath it.

Trait recognition is only the entry point. Recovery develops the awareness, regulation, alignment, connection, leadership, and purpose people can carry into everyday life.

People do not leave their traits behind when a program ends. They take their developmental tools everywhere life takes them.

The architecture underneath the experience

One human development framework. Three primary applications.

Trait-Based is the model. Start from Strength is the experience. The framework supports the broader arc of human development through three primary applications: Prevention, Recovery, and Leadership.
P

Prevention

Build identity, self-awareness, strengths, and connection before fragmentation and harmful patterns deepen.

R

Recovery

Restore identity after addiction, trauma, imbalance, shame, and disconnection, then develop a life that can keep growing.

L

Leadership

Expand identity into influence, responsibility, culture, systems, and the way people lead under pressure.

The Tree of Traits

Ten measurable traits. Three connected pathways.

Grit, Balance, and Grace organize the ten traits within the framework. They are not the three applications. Each pathway helps people understand how their traits are expressed, where they may be out of balance, and what they can continue developing.

PATHWAY 01

Grit

ResilienceTenacityDetermination

The capacities that help people move through challenge, persist with direction, and act on what matters.

PATHWAY 02

Balance

Self-AwarenessEmotional IntelligenceAuthenticityCreativity

The connected capacities that help people observe, understand, align, and create a new response.

PATHWAY 03

Grace

EmpathyAppreciationMotivational

The relational capacities that strengthen connection, belonging, encouragement, and care for others.

The developmental movement

The Path of Balance

These are four connected capacities, not unrelated strengths placed beside one another. Together, they create a practical movement back to balance.

1Self-AwarenessObserve what is happening within you.
2Emotional IntelligenceUnderstand what your emotions are communicating.
3AuthenticityAlign your values, words, and actions.
4CreativityImagine and create a new response.
The Start from Strength Recovery Experience

Eight modules. Forty lessons. One connected journey.

The experience moves from identity through shadow, self-leadership, balance, relationship, leadership, and purpose. It is a path for development, not a cage people must move through perfectly.

The journey moves from seeing yourself differently to living from what you see.
Module 1

Who Am I?

Meet the ten traits, look beneath labels and behavior, and ask what has remained true through every changing season.

Module 2

The Shadowlands

Explore what has been hidden, rejected, or expressed out of balance while keeping responsibility and choice in view.

Module 3

Self-Leadership

Turn toward emotions, thoughts, cravings, relationships, and goals. Notice what is happening and choose what will lead the next moment.

Module 4

Finding Balance

Practice returning through the body, reflection, self-care, habit change, and appreciation.

Module 5

Connecting to Community

Bring recovery into belonging, communication, boundaries, conflict, and uncertainty. Healing deepens when it can be practiced with people.

Module 6

Transformational Leadership

Explore influence, authenticity, service, recognition, and change. A title is not required to affect what becomes possible.

Module 7

Purpose in Practice

Carry recovery into work, relationships, money, time, reputation, and the places where life becomes practical.

Module 8

The Journey Ahead

Turn toward contribution, work, value, what brings you alive, and the life that is still being written.

Built for real settings

One human development architecture. Multiple recovery settings.

Recovery is one application of the broader Trait-Based Framework. It can support people and organizations across a continuum of care without reducing every setting to the same program.

Clinical

Treatment and Behavioral Health

Residential, outpatient, mental health, and integrated behavioral health programs.

Community

Community-Based Recovery

Faith communities, local initiatives, nonprofit partners, and grant-supported cohorts.

Workforce

Peer Support

A shared language, measurable growth, and development for the people who walk alongside others.

Continuity

Recovery Housing

Developmental practices that support identity, community, responsibility, and long-term stability.

Systems

Justice and Diversion

Human-centered pathways that strengthen self-awareness, choice, accountability, and reintegration.

Education

Collegiate Recovery

Identity, belonging, leadership, and purpose for students building a life in recovery.

Evidence in practice

Measure what matters without losing the human story.

Research, participant experience, and implementation data work together to help organizations understand engagement, growth, wellbeing, and the support people may need next.

97.1%90-day retention reported for the Trait-Based intervention sample in the published study.
Peer reviewedPublished in Scientific Reports, part of the Nature portfolio.

The published study used quasi-random assignment. The retention comparison included 139 intervention participants and 425 comparison participants. Clinical symptom findings in the article came from a smaller matched pre/post subset. Results should not be interpreted as universal or causal.

Community recovery implementation and facilitator training
Community implementation

Recovery can grow through community.

An adult community-based implementation brought together trained facilitators, structured recovery experiences, longitudinal assessment, and local partnership. Evaluation tracked development across traits, depression, anxiety, self-image, and resilience.

More than curriculum

A complete implementation ecosystem.

Organizations receive more than content. The developmental architecture is supported by training, tools, measurement, technology, and implementation partnership.
